How I Actually Got Here
I didn’t go to photography school. Didn’t do a course or an apprenticeship or any of that. I picked up a camera as a teenager and got completely lost in it – black and white stuff mostly, the contrast, the mood of it. Then life happened. Jobs, moving around, all the usual. Photography went from a proper obsession to something I squeezed in when I could.
Then we moved to Lee-on-Solent.
The light here in the early morning is genuinely something else. That beaten copper colour on the Solent before the sun’s properly up. The wide open sky over the beach. The way the whole coastline goes gold about 45 minutes before sunset. It sounds a bit much to say a place changed things but honestly it did. I started shooting properly again, got serious about it, and decided that if I was going to do this I’d actually do it.
So that’s where we are.
What Working With Me Is Actually Like
I’m not a big production photographer. I don’t turn up with a team and a load of kit and spend an hour setting everything up before anyone’s allowed to smile.
It’s more relaxed than that. We’ll have a quick chat beforehand, sort a location that actually works, and get on with it. I’ll keep things moving so it doesn’t feel like a big deal. Most of the best shots come when people have stopped thinking about the camera – and getting there is mostly about not making the whole thing feel like a massive event.
I work across Hampshire and the South Coast. Based in Lee-on-Solent, so I know this bit of the coast properly well – the good spots, the parking situations, the times of day that are worth getting up early for.
The Camera Stuff (People Always Ask)
Style-wise, I lean towards natural light wherever I can get it. The Solent coast at golden hour is basically the best free studio there is. I’ll always work with available light first before reaching for flash. For indoor portrait work I use off-camera flash and I’m pretty handy with dramatic lighting setups when the job calls for it.
The black and white stuff is still there too. Some shots are just better without colour and I’ll always flag that when I see it. The first thing I fell in love with in photography was monochrome and that hasn’t changed.
Want to Work Together?
Have a look at what I offer or just drop me a message. I’m friendly and I don’t bite.
I work with families, couples and individuals across Lee-on-Solent, Gosport, Fareham, Portsmouth and the wider Hampshire area.
